Finding Balance as a Parent and a Coach: Navigating Both with Intention
Parenting is a full-time job, but so is running a Coaching practice.
Finding "balance" between the two isn’t easy - it’s a constant juggling act that requires intention, flexibility, and, most of all, self-compassion.
There are days when I feel like I’ve got it all sorted, moving smoothly between client sessions, school pick-ups, clubs, and family dinners.
And there are days when I feel like I’m barely keeping up, with emails mounting, housework piling up, and the kids clamouring for my attention.
Through trial and error, I’ve discovered a few key strategies that help me navigate these challenges and maintain a sense of balance:
1. Set Clear Boundaries:
When I’m coaching, I’m fully present with my clients. When I’m with my family, I focus on being there for them. Easier said than done, but establishing boundaries has helped me compartmentalise my time and energy. My work hours are dedicated to my business, and when the laptop closes, my focus shifts to my family. We all know where we stand and expectations are managed.
2. Prioritise Ruthlessly:
I’ve learned to let go of the idea that I can “do it all.” Instead, I focus on what matters day to day. Sometimes that means postponing a non-urgent task to spend time with my kids. Other times, it means asking for help so I can deal with the more urgent things.
3. Embrace Imperfection:
There’s no such thing as "perfect balance". Some weeks, my coaching practice takes more of my energy. Other weeks, it’s my family. Instead of striving for perfection, I AIM for balance between the two, knowing that it’s OKAY if one area needs more attention some days than the other.
4. Take Time for Myself:
This one took me a while to learn! I can’t pour from an empty cup. Making time for self-care is ESSENTIAL. During the day this might be a quiet cup of tea, a walk, or a few minutes of meditation. Come the evening this can be joining my yoga class for pure relaxation. These moments give me the mental and physical energy I need to show up for my family and my clients. Self-care recharges me.
5. Celebrate the Small Wins:
Every day won’t always go to plan, but there are always moments to celebrate - a great coaching session, a laugh with my kids, or simply making it through a tough day. Acknowledging these small wins keeps a healthy perspective and gives a well deserved pat on the back!
Balancing parenting and running a Coaching practice is a deeply personal journey.
What works for me might not work for someone else, but one thing I’ve learned is that balance isn’t about doing everything perfectly.
It’s about making "intentional" choices that align with "your" values and needs.
If you’re navigating this balance, know that it’s okay to feel stretched at times.
Give yourself grace, lean on your support system, and remember that you’re doing an amazing job - even on the messy days!
